The books of 1 and 2 Samuel tell the story of an important time in Israel’s history: the beginning of the monarchy under Saul and the rise and reign of King David. It’s a story of individual people as they relate to God. It’s also a story of politics and the dynamics of power—including its use and abuse.

The most effective character portrayals are perhaps to be found in the latter half of 2 Samuel within what is called the Succession Narrative. However, the same interest in psychology and emotional reactions can be seen throughout the books. The inner character of the individuals is recorded with the same brilliance as are their political and military actions.
